Area Manager*

in Hargeisa 

The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with an initial contract duration of two years. There are good prospects for an extension. Employment location will be Hargeisa, Somaliland, with frequent travel to the project locations in the country.

Welthungerhilfe’s country programme in Somalia & Somaliland is at an exciting juncture, as we look to consolidate a period of growth into new target areas and sectors across the country. As we go through a process of structuring our new country programme and developing a joint strategy for South/Central Somalia and Somaliland, this is a unique opportunity to join our senior management team in a strategic role. As Area Manager, you will lead a well-established field team and contribute to direct implementation and collaboration with partners in the field of resilience and climate adaptation. In addition, you will have a particular responsibility for leading the development of new business and funding proposals in Somaliland.

Your responsibilities

  • Ensure that all projects in the area are implemented according to the country programme and the rules and standards of donors and Welthungerhilfe
  • Ensure that all project relevant support is in place (monitoring, logistics, finance administration, etc.)
  • Identify co-financing opportunities and develop successful project proposals
  • Liaise closely with line ministries and contribute to the development of strategic partnerships in Somaliland
  • Coordinate national staff in engagement with clusters, line ministries and external stakeholders
  • Contribute proactively to risk management across the full scope of operations
  • Actively contribute to the development of synergistic areas of work with other teams across the wider Somali region

Your profile

  • A university or college degree in social sciences, humanitarian/development studies or a related discipline
  • A minimum of 5 years professional experience working in the humanitarian/development sector
  • Experience in working in cooperation with national partner organizations
  • Strong planning and management experience including managing multiple projects at once
  • Broad intercultural competence and team collaboration skills
  • Readiness to receive necessary vaccinations for working in Welthungerhilfe’s project countries
  • Excellent spoken and written English language skills; Afsomaali and/or German language skills would be an advantage
