How can you make a difference?

Purpose of activity:

Join our team to  take stock on activities of the ACERWC in ending harmful practices: child marriage and FGM.

Goal and Objective:

  • To take stock of the activities mentioned above, ensure coherence in responses, and achieve better results for the ACERWC.
  • Work full-time with the Special rapporteur’s mandate on Child marriage and other Harmful Practices and coordinate the Committee’s activities on the same.

Scope of work and Activities:

  • The consultant is expected to perform the following tasks:
  1. Organizing platforms on issues that affect children and young people particularly harmful practices, ending child marriage and FGM
  • Produce and disseminate a comprehensive continental report on the theme of DAC, which highlights, among other things, gains made since 2013, progress in eliminating harmful cultural practices and persistent challenges.
  • Examine the performance of Member States on harmful practices affecting children; launched public information and awareness campaigns for the abolition of harmful practices affecting children; identified and engaged children who are in a particularly vulnerable situation to be affected by harmful practices; and taken legislative and other measures to prohibit all forms of harmful practices.
  • Compile and disseminate best practices and challenges on ending harmful practices in the continent.
  1. Assist the mandate of the Special Rapporteur
  • Draft resolutions on harmful practices.
  • Organize fact-finding missions of the Special Rapporteur and produce reports on the observations and reflections, recommendations of the SR on country monitoring missions on ending harmful practices against children
  • Take the lead in developing and disseminating the ACERWC’s documents, including General Comments, Standards, Guidelines, Concluding Observations, Communications, Statements, and Resolutions related to harmful practices.
  1. Activities around the join General Comment on FGM
  • Follow up on the drafting and finalization of the Joint GC.
  • Compile inputs and comments and ensure incorporation of the same on the draft GC.
  • Organize a continental launch of the General Comment on harmful practices such (FGM, child marriage) and develop a dissemination strategy.
  1. Coordination activities
  • Organize platforms for cooperation and dialogue with Member States, National Human Rights Institutions, relevant intergovernmental organizations, international and regional mechanisms, UN Agencies and CSOs.
  • Coordinate the activities of the ACERWC with that of the various initiatives within the AU, including the AU ending child marriage campaign and the Saleema initiatives to end FGM.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in International Law, Child Rights, Human Rights, Social Sciences, or related disciplines
  • A minimum of 2 [Two] years of relevant professional experience in  human rights and children’s rights in Africa. Experience with AU working on human rights, children’s rights or related discipline in the African context is an added value.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the African Human Rights System, specifically the African Children’s Charter and the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child
  • Demonstrates knowledge of matters relating to child protection and harmful practices affecting children’s rights
  • Excellent writing, conceptual and analytical skills
  • Excellent research, communication, and facilitation skills
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

  • Ability to write technical and non-technical information material with a clear understanding of harmful practices under the framework of Gender Based violence and harmful practices
  • Ability to work collaboratively on a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated skills in leadership, diplomacy, collaboration, and interpersonal communication.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment
  • Ability to work with sensitive data and information in an ethical, confidential, and trustworthy manner.

Information Technology Skills 

Proficiency in the use of at least one software in each of the following categories:

DSA will not be paid while you are at the duty station, if you travel for official business outside of the duty station the ticket cost will be covered and applicable DSA will be paid based on UNICEF policy. Travel ticket costs during arrival to duty station and departure are not covered by UNICEF. In addition, visa and related costs shall be covered by the consultant should be included in the financial proposal you will attach for the daily fee requested.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
